Shift Happens

Scan 23Last night I had the craziest dream.  I was in my studio showing a client a pile of fabric pieces, neatly cut and stacked.  I was telling her all about a new dress design I had been working on, a simple shift dress.  (In my waking life I have been thinking about shift dresses, wanting to work on a new design for one).  She said she couldn’t picture what it was going to look like from the stack of fabric, so I sketched it for her.  I remember in the dream being very excited as I told her about the elasticized sleeves, neck, and waistline, and how the elastic made ruffles (can you imagine?) around the neck and arms.  How the waist could be belted or sashed.  But what was really exciting was the inset over the hip in a contrasting color fabric.  The client seemed dubious, so I went on to tell her I had already sold the prototype to a famous person for a lot of money, and it was sure to be a hit.

When I woke up laughing about the dream, I realized the message of the dream was the word- SHIFT.  True, I had been thinking of a new dress design, but I had not been able to get to my cutting table to work on it.  Literally, there were still unpacked boxes from the move in my cutting room that kept me from working.  We’ve been in a Mercury retrograde the whole month of February, which always makes me sluggish.  Couple that with being physically tired from moving and setting up, as well as my awful little character flaw of not being able to work until every single item is in its proper place.

But today it all seemed to SHIFT.  I feel energized again.  I promised myself I would unpack one box a day, and be creative the rest of the day.  So as soon as I finish this post, I’m going to organize my new office, work on the new website some more, and hopefully get to my cutting table to work/play.  So be on the lookout for the new dress- I promise it will NOT have elastic ruffles.  I’m thinking more Jackie Kennedy (simple and elegant) or Lily Pulitzer (bold vintage floral prints).  It will arrive like the Spring flowers, as they poke through the last bits of winter doldrums.  (See what I did there with all that simile?)

PS- the new website has a new address, wwwregaliahandmadeclothing.com.  Take a look, but remember it’s under construction!
